I’m getting started on another pet portrait.

This is the very handsome Nuchi!

Nuchi Yorkie Pet PortraitWould you just look at that face!

and yes

there is an attitude there…..you can see that can’t you?

He was very calm during the whole photo shoot.  He really could have cared less and didn’t really understand what all the fuss was about!  He’s very sweet.  I’ve met many a “princess”, but this is my very first….

“Prince Charming”

Sketch of Yorkie named NuchiThis is a very fast and loose sketch which I’ll now be using to prepare for the painting.  Nuchi will be done in my usual realistic style on a 11 inch by 14 inch baltic birch panel.  I usually don’t spend a lot of time sketching, I’m always anxious to get that paint brush in my hand.  But….I did take this sketch of Nuchi further then I usually do and I will admit I could have spent a lot more time on it.  I may, at some point, go back and revisit this quick little sketch and see just where it leads me!  It might be fun to do several little pencil sketches of some of the pups I’ve captured in paintings and then put together a line of little note cards or maybe even some cute little decorative pillows!  Wouldn’t it be fun to see a whole row of puppy faces and maybe a kitty or two, looking up from the sofa at you!

  1. Oh, you’re right – a bit of attitude there. That will make him even more to paint. I especially like the eyes and nose in the sketch.

  2. Okay, if that’s your quick little sketch of Nuchi, I would love to take your Quick Little Sketching Class! Just to add another class to the roster of the ones you’re preparing for us… 🙂

    1. Ha! Thanks Harmony! Ya know I have always felt I was ‘lacking’ in the area of sketching…the paint brush always felt so much more comfortable in my hand. This is really the very first sketch…that I not only enjoyed, but actually felt as though I had really achieved something special!

      1. Yes, that sketch is a portrait in itself. If you recall how you went about doing it (which I often forget when I’m in the flow of art-making), would you share your sketching process in one of your blog posts?

        1. You are so right Harmony….about ‘being in the creative flow’. When I read your comment, I started thinking about the process and I’m not sure (at this point) if I can lay out a coherent approach to how I sketch. BUT….I will make an effort. I can tell you that when I discovered I could not only use my pencil to create texture, but my eraser….it was an eye opener! LOL!

    1. Yes Anna…he is sooo very huggable too! I’m sorry you are in a position where you can’t have a dog….they bring so much love into your life. I have two right now and due to our traveling we made the decision to be ‘petless’ for a while once they are both gone. I don’t think that will last too long…..I just can’t imagine my life without a furry baby at my side.

  3. Oh what a fun new model. Your sketch is fabulous and I can’t wait to see your painting. I’m thinking capturing that sweet curly fur is going to be fun. You get to meet the most interesting characters in your work Debbie. 🙂

    1. Thank you Deborah! Yes, I’m loving that curly hair! I do meet some great folks and their furbabies are always so special!

    1. Debbie
I also wanted to comment on how I love the scetch you did on Nuchi! That is very impressive!

      1. Thank you Vicky! Glad to hear I am on the right track. I spent the day yesterday working on the portrait. I try to get a new post up with a photo soon.
