I love this little guy and a few days ago a very special package arrived for him……
His new wheels from Eddie’s Wheels! We were so excited and also apprehensive. Cosmo can be a bit on the ‘skittish’ side and we were not sure how he would take to his new wheels. We soon found out that all that worry was for nothing. I think it took him all of about 2 minutes to realize that those wheels were his ticket to freedom! Once again he could go for walks….stopping along the way to give tail wags and puppy kisses to everyone. Stopping to smell all those wonderful smells of things gone by and yet to come. No more dragging….no more falling down….
Cosmo has….most probably, degenerative myelopathy. There is no proof positive test for this, it is simply a matter of ruling out everything else….which we did. Our vet basically told us we had done everything we could….we just need to enjoy the time we have left with our boy. I was determined to do all I could to prolong and maintain his quality of life. First, I removed as many toxins from his diet as I possibly could…..I do give him heartworm medication, but we now rely on homeopathic flea and tick collar from Holistic Family and Pets for both our furbabies. I also now prepare all their food and treats. We do leg exercises and a little message along his spinal cord….and now, happily, we can go for walks. His back legs still function somewhat…the wheels help him maintain his balance and the mere act of moving those legs back and forth helps to keep his muscles toned. You’ll notice the little boots on his back feet, those prevent him from damaging his toes when they drag on the ground. Eventually, when his legs no longer function at all, we will place his paws within a set of stirrups to keep them from dragging the ground. Please know…he is in no pain from this disease, he is still his sweet and loving self. Still loves to play and wrestle and make those squeaky toys squeal….he just can’t make those back legs move the way they should.
We don’t know how long Cosmo will be with us….or even how quickly or slowly the disease will progress. All I know is that I love this sweet boy and I love that, with the help of these wheels, he can have back some of the freedom he has lost. And that, my friends, means the world to me….to see my boy happily trotting around the neighborhood….waggie tailed and smiling!
How blessed he is to have you. Gorgeous Cosmo
Thanks Kama. Love my Cosmo.
Debbie, it does my heart such good to see that Cosmo is mobile again! I love his wheels. The first time I saw wheels like his was in a photo from Brighthaven, an animal sanctuary in California. I think I saw that snapshot in a book by Kathleen Prasad, who teaches Reiki for animals. I imagine that Cosmo would LOVE receiving Reiki. If you don’t already know how to do it, I’ll bet you can find a class in your area (or travel to one in your RV). Check out Kathleen’s animal Reiki books, too — they’re great, just like Cosmo!
Thank you Harmony! I never thought of doing Reiki with Cosmo….and I will check out Kathleen’s book!
This is a really cool idea to extend the enjoyable lifespan of pets!
Thank you….I do feel blessed to be able to provide these wheels for Cosmo!
Dogs really are the best companions; I’m glad that yours will be by your side a bit longer!
Thanks Stacy….me too!
What a wonderful post Debbie. Cosmo looks so rakish and ready for to roll out for a good time indeed! So glad he’s getting to do his neighborhood rounds and spread his magic and that your heart is smiling too.
Thanks Deborah…..yes, my heart is smiling. So fortunate to be able to provide for my sweet boy….very blessed!
He sure looks like a happy boy with his new wheels! Wishing you all a long and happy time.
Cheers,
Debbie
Thanks Debbie…..he does seem to love the wheels!
What treasures you all are – you, Cosmo, your vet and the wonderful maker of those wheels. Have fun with your boy.
Sure will Linda…..life is full of such wonderful…beautiful….miracles!
Awwww. He is indeed blessed. You are such a gem to give him such wonderful quality of life Debbie. That is the best news I’ve heard today. He looks so happy with himself. Wishing you and Cosmo the very best for a very long time to come. Please give him a hug from me too.
Thanks Kelly and I certainly will give him a big ole hug from you….he sent kisses back….slurp, slurp!
what a wonderful contraption. Cosmo definitely looks like a Cosmo – what a perfect name for him. I love that you are cooking his food, watching his diet – while I feed my dogs – dog food – I’m very picky about the brands and they only get natural treats. Carrots are a top favorite with me – with sweet potatoes pretty close. He looks so happy – and he probably loves the attention this contraption gets for him! Give him a hug from me!
I will Vickie, thank you so much for stopping by!
