San Diego….well, I was so excited to go to the zoo here.  I had heard so much about it that I was sure I would want to spend several days there.  Good thing my ‘little voice’ kicked in and said, “hey, why don’t you just buy the one day pass and see what you think.”  Good plan.  The zoo was a disappointment.  It is a nice zoo, but very overpriced for what is there.  I have been to many zoos across the country and, quite frankly, I’ve seen better for a lot less money too!  I think you are paying for those pandas and I certainly did enjoy seeing these guys.

Happy-Pandaand I absolutely adore Harpy Eagles…….and this one was happy to pose for me

Harpy-Eaglewhat a beauty

and ya know how I love me some flamingos…….

Tall-FlamingoI don’t think I have ever seen one so tall!

All in all a nice enough zoo, but just no ‘wow’ factor and with the price I expected a “WOW”!  Now, to be fair, a large part of the zoo is under renovation to be completed some time in 2017….so maybe that will make a difference.

Beyond the zoo….the beach, Sunset Beach to be exact!  We could not stay until sunset, but I still found it to be just gorgeous!

just awesome

We were lucky enough to find a great ‘parking’ spot in a regional park know as Sweetwater in Bonita Ca…..about 15 miles outside of San Diego…

Home Sweet Home

and that brings us to the traffic.  Traffic is definitely a challenge here, we found the ‘best’ time to be out and about was between the hours of 9am and 2pm and the weekend….our advice….stay home!  LOL!

  1. Thanks for sharing your visit to the zoo Debbie! Sounds like you had a great time in spite of the expensive tickets and renovation project. You take beautiful photos!

    1. I know Amy….you should see them when something truly grabs their attention and those feathers all fan out……so cool! Definitely on my ‘painting’ list!

  2. San Diego is one of my very favorite places to visit!!! Your beach photos are SPECTACULAR!!!! And your zoo photos are delightful. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Based on your photos I think the zoo should be known for their giant flamingo as well as their giant pandas. That’s one tall trooper! Lovely water photos as well. Enjoy the sunshine and stay clear of the heavy traffic.

  4. Having moved from LA to here 9 years ago, I’d have to say that traffic was one of my most prioritzed reasons for moving. One day, I drove from San Diego to LA and it took 5+ hours!! Yikes, I was almost crying by the time I got home.

    1. Oh my Kimberly…..what an ordeal that must have been for you. Traffic was bad enough on Interstate 15 and we did run into a bit of a slow down around Riverside. So many people….looking forward to finding more wide open spaces along our journey!

  5. Yeah we are going to avoid LA…..just no place for a dually truck and a 40 foot fifth wheel! We are going to take 15 up past LA….I’m sure we will still run into traffic, but hopefully not as bad.

  6. You ain’t seen nothin yet as far as traffic. It will be better though once you get past LA. Sorry the zoo was such a disappointment. Have not been there since I was a kid and have great memories and pictures. Actually mom still has the pictures. ????
